Why Your Car Still Shakes After a Wheel Balance

You've had the wheels balanced. Maybe twice. The steering wheel still shimmies at 70 on I-595. At this point most drivers assume something expensive is wrong.

Usually it isn't. Usually the problem is something a standard balancer physically cannot see.

What a spin balance misses

A regular balancer spins the wheel in the air and measures weight distribution. That's all it measures. But a tire isn't perfectly round or perfectly uniform in stiffness — and it only shows those flaws when it's pressed against the road with the car's weight on it.

A tire can be perfectly balanced and still have a stiff spot in the sidewall that hits the pavement like a small flat spot, once per revolution, seventy times a minute at highway speed. That's the shimmy you're feeling.

What Road Force does differently

Our Road Force machine presses a load roller against the tire while it spins — simulating the car's weight on the road. It measures how round the tire and wheel assembly actually is under load, and it measures the wheel separately from the tire.

Then it does something clever called force matching: it tells us how to rotate the tire on the wheel so the tire's stiffest point lines up with the wheel's lowest point. The two flaws cancel each other out instead of stacking up.

When it's not the tire

Sometimes the measurement tells us the wheel itself is bent — common here in South Florida, where the potholes come out after every rainy season. Better to know that than to keep paying for balances that can't fix it.
