What a Custom Alignment Actually Changes

Every car leaves the factory with alignment specs chosen for the average driver: mild understeer, long tire life, no surprises. Those numbers are a compromise — and if you've lowered your car, added wheels, or drive it with any enthusiasm, the compromise is working against you.

The three numbers that matter

Toe is the direction the tires point relative to each other. A few millimeters of toe change is the difference between a car that darts over pavement seams and one that tracks straight with your hands off the wheel.

Camber is the tilt of the tire. More negative camber keeps the tire flat on the road in a corner — grip you can feel — but the factory rarely gives you much, because it trades a little straight-line tire wear.

Caster affects steering weight and stability. Most cars can't adjust it without aftermarket parts, but when they can, it's free stability at speed.

Why "in spec" isn't the same as "right"

When a chain shop aligns your car, the machine shows green when every number lands inside the factory tolerance window. That window is wide. Both edges of it are "in spec" — and they drive completely differently.

A custom alignment starts with a different question: what is the car doing that you don't like, and what do you want it to do? Wandering at highway speed, eating inside tire edges, pushing wide in corners — each of those points at specific numbers. We set them deliberately, then test drive to confirm.

Lowered cars especially

If your car has been lowered and never aligned to a spec chosen for that ride height, the tires are almost certainly wearing on their inside edges right now, where you can't see it. That's the most common thing we find on first visits.
